About fishi pedia

fishi pedia logoFishipedia is prepared for the students who study fish and fisheries at under-graduate and post-graduate level in our Universities and Colleges. It is worth mentioning that during the past many years the authors of this blog have taught fish biology and fisheries to postgraduate students and authors themselves and their students have done researches on several aspects of fish biology, fish physiology, environmental biology of fish and fisheries. It is no wonder, therefore, that our experiences and problems faced by our students motivated us to compile our notes and observations, with the help of relevant literature, in the form of a blog. The blog is designed to give students rapid, easy access to up-to-date and authentic information in a style which facilitates learning. The first part of the blog describes general characters of fish and reviews the various schemes of fish classification with a comprehensive account of the origin, evolution, interrelationships and morphological peculiarities of major groups of living and extinct fishes. The different bodily systems such as exoskeleton, locomotory, digestive, blood vascular, respiratory, excretory and osmoregulatory, reproductive, nervous, endocrine and neurosecretory, skeletal, swim bladder and weberian ossicles and specialised organs in fishes are described with the help of easily understandable text, accurate diagrams and Indian examples, as far as possible. The blog also covers major topics in fish ecology"including adapatations of hillstream and deep sea fishes, eco -physiological aspects of fish migration, feeding and spawning ecology, parental care and effects of pollution on fishery resources. Several chapters at the end of the blog cover all important aspects of culture and capture fisheries such as pond culture, composite fish culture, induced breeding; hillstream, riverine, lacustrine, brackishwater and marine fisheries; prawn and molluscan fisheries; processing and preservation of fish; fish diseases; fecundity, growth and age determination; fishing crafts and gears; and larvivorous and ornamental fishes. A special feature of the blog is that its also covers important aspects of fish genetics, biotechnology, conservation; fisheries economics and extension and aquaculture. As such, this is an ideal textblog for students of the M.Sc.Zoology with specialisation in fish and fisheries, and also for students of BFSc,MFSc and Industrial Fish and Fisheries all over the country.Fishery scientists, research scholars in fish biology and fisheries and senior students who prepare for competitive examinations, will also find the blog quite useful for them. we would like to thank all the distinguished authors and researchers whose work and contributions have formed a basis of some key material for this blog. Some of the blogs consulted by us are mentioned at the end. However, individual research papers could not be quoted due to constraints of space. The interest taken by the publisher in this blog is also highly appreciated.
